Sustainable Design
Based in Milton, Massachusetts and serving clients in the greater Boston area, our company has been organic since it was first established in 2002. We approach landscapes from the belief that our gardens and properties are a small part of the larger world that we live in, and that we have an exciting opportunity to cultivate them in a sustainable way, one yard at a time. We plan gardens for low maintenance and low water usage, pay careful attention to using the right plant in the right place, and downsize lawns wherever possible. We also extend this sensibility to the planning of hardscape projects like patios, walkways, walls, and driveways by using reclaimed and recycled stone where possible and products like permeable pavers that reduce storm water runoff. Almost every property can benefit from having less lawn, and we can suggest alternatives to turfgrass that save water and are easy to care for.
Organic Garden Care
Many people have the mistaken notion that organic gardening requires more work and increases the burdens of the gardener. In fact, just the opposite is true.
Organic gardening is really all about the care and feeding of your soil, because the new soil science has shown us that the ground beneath our feet is literally alive. Thousands of microorganisms, invisible to the eye but very much a part of the web of life that supports all living plants, are in every square inch of healthy soil. Why is this important? Because many of the practices of conventional gardening and landscaping actually disrupt the natural cycle of the soil. Chemical fertilizers can kill soil organisms, leaving your plants dependent on a continued supply of outside nutrients that requires more and more work from the gardener. Along with pesticides and herbicides, they also pose a serious threat ` and to wildlife, as well as to the health of your family and your pets.
For this reason we use organic alternatives like compost and compost tea. We focus on soil building, feeding the soil so the soil can feed the plants. By helping you make least toxic choices for your landscape we can help you experience the joy and connection with beauty that a garden provides while contributing to the health of the environment as well.
